My New Year’s Resolutions 2018
Okay, fine, so I didn’t keep a single New Year’s resolution I made last year. I tried and came close to a few. However, I don’t think those were particularly realistic goals. They were goals for a person living a different life than I am.
This year my goals are much more personal and suited to me.
So, here goes!
My New Year’s Resolutions
Talk less – For a long time I used to be very shy. I followed the lead of whoever was kind enough to want me around. Has anyone ever seen the graphic that says something like “how did the introvert make friends? some extrovert at one point just sorta adopted them.” That was and is slightly still the way it is for me.
But I’ve definitely grown over the years and perhaps due to just having more experiences I care a lot less about how I’m perceived and I speak up much more often.
But I don’t like how often I tend to turn a conversation from the person I’m talking to into a story or anecdote about myself. For me, I know that it’s mostly coming from a place of deeply wanting other people (especially those I admire) to understand me. I want to show them that I relate. On the one-hand this is a good thing, a step in the right direction. On the other, I still feel like I haven’t quite gotten socializing down, yet.
So, this will be the year of zipping my lip a little bit more and trying to truly listen and ask meaningful follow-up questions when people talk about themselves.
Share more – Another bad habit of mine! I’m constantly creating, but I’m not always sharing! A big kick in my butt for this resolution came from my partner and he said, “I want to see what you’re doing. And I want you to be doing something every day.” Coming from him that really lit a fire under my ass, so to be honest most of my content and fervor for creating lately was inspired by him. I guess knowing that there’s someone who actually wants to see my work and creations really woke me up. Now I create to show him (and myself) what I can do. It’s been a fantastic motivation to share more!
Save money – Technically this was one of my New Year’s Resolutions from last year…I even set the bar pretty low with a reasonable requirement of saving $50 per week, but one thing led to another and that never happened. But! I can’t ignore the fact that I’m in my late 20s now and virtually have no savings and a pile of debt. So! My first step will be to open a savings account in 2018.
Pay off debt – And on that note! My second step will be to put more of my money towards paying off debt. I feel like we all do it at one point or another — use a credit card with good intentions of paying it back and then before you know it it’s incurring substantial interest. I really want to be smarter with my credit. Luckily I have maintained a good credit score. Perhaps I will share more on how I do that later. But! It could always be better and I know I would certainly be happier to pay off my debt sooner rather than later.
I’d like to be more strategic, as well, and eventually use my credit cards to earn rewards like flyer miles. God knows we all spend 1000s per year on simple things like gas and coffee, we might as well get rewarded for our little expenditures!
Invest in Adventure – Hand in hand with paying off debt, saving money, and creating more I want to invest in seeing the world. Up until now, I either eat or wear my money. But in 2018 I’d really like to adjust my focus to simply leaving the house more. It’s going to be a challenge for me, but the creative rewards will be great!
Gym – This is one that I know I can achieve because I started it before 2017 was even over. When I was in college going to the gym every day after class was part of my routine. After I graduated I moved away from the gym and started to do more home workouts to save money. However, a real passion was missing. I realized I’m the type of person who has to go to a specific place to work out. Home workouts just don’t do it for me.
So, in October of 2017 I decided that there are some things you just need to invest in and the most important one is the health of your body!
Ever since then, I’ve been going hard at the gym. Harder than I ever have before.
My goal for 2018 is to go 5 times per week. In December I actually achieved this goal, so now I just need to continue it!
I absolutely love the gym and I will probably make a post talking about how to stay committed to the gym and (what I believe is) the key to keeping your New Year’s resolutions!
I’m always striving to be a better version of myself, so I believe wholeheartedly in creating goals year round. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to start!
