My Christmas Eve Essentials

Christmas Eve is all about spending time with loved ones. I believe in rejoicing in the little things: friends, family, comforts, and joy.

Growing up my parents, my sister, and I would go to midnight mass (if you didn’t grow up going to church, midnight mass is a special night where you go to church at around 9PM and don’t get home until around 11PM…so it was midnight… kinda…)

But! I actually always liked it because it was the one time we could play with fire (haha).

Standing in the church in our new Christmas dresses, my sister and I would light each others candles and marvel at the ambience. I’m not a religious person as an adult, but it was all part of the Christmas magic that I still hold dear to this day. It was part of my family’s tradition.

Today my tradition is simple. I like spending the night eating delicious food and enjoying some yummy beverages either in the comfort of my own home or at someone else’s.

And if you’re a homebody like me, I put together a list of some of my “essentials” to set the scene for my perfect Christmas Eve!

Hot Cocoa

The ultimate in cozy beverages has to be hot cocoa. Recently I perfected a recipe for the best non-dairy hot chocolate. I came across the recipe, not because I’m lactose intolerant or anything, but because I had just bought some chocolate almond milk and was simply curious about what would happen if I made my cocoa with it. So, I took my chocolate almond milk and mixed it with a packet of Swiss Miss simply cocoa and heated it in the microwave for one minute and thirty seconds. It was delicious! Normally I would add whole milk to my cocoa for creaminess, but this was just as good…and more chocolatey tasting, which is always preferred!

The Perfect Red Lipstick

If a mistletoe kiss is on your Christmas Eve wish list the best red lipstick I’ve ever owned is hands-down Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Cruella.” It’s a deep, true red that is instantly glamorous. During the Christmas season it’s the only color I wear!

Pine Scented Candle

I don’t know about you, but I love to set the scene for a cozy night with a fitting fragrance. And IMHO on Christmas you have to have a pine scented candle! I love this one (pictured above) that I got at Bath and Body Works. It’s probably one of the strongest pine scented candles I’ve ever owned!

Peppermint Hand Lotion

A little pampering is always nice, right? I’m obsessed with mint fragrances year round, but I especially have to have them in December. This hand lotion has to be my favorite! It smells like a sweet peppermint candy. Mmm…

Christmas Movies

And finally, I can’t go a Christmas Eve without watching one of my favorite Christmas films! And if you’re looking for some ideas on what to watch I put together a list of my favorites here.

The Grinch by Dr. Seuss

Every Christmas Eve my mom and dad would read us The Grinch from our big book of Dr. Seuss. It was my favorite tradition and the perfect way to end the night before Christmas!

What’s your idea of a perfect Christmas Eve? I’d love to know how you spend the holidays!
